Strokkur Geysir
Strokkur Geysir
Strokkur Geysir, also known as the Geyser, is located in the Haukadulur Mountains northeast of Reykjavík, Iceland. This vast area is home to over 50 geysers of various sizes. The largest and most famous is Strokkur Geysir, which boasts a visitor center nearby. Most people come here to see the hot springs gushing from the ground.
"Geysir" means "to erupt" in Icelandic. Why does this erupt? Iceland is home to several active volcanoes. When located at shallow depths in the Earth's crust, magma flows beneath the surface. Combined with groundwater beneath the crust, this heated groundwater, with nowhere to flow and escape, creates immense pressure, creating an ideal space for eruption. Every 10-15 minutes, the heated groundwater erupts from the geyser's mouth, with varying heights and force, reaching as high as 40 meters. It's truly spectacular, but if you have the opportunity to witness it, it's safer to observe from a distance.

It's truly spectacular, but if you have the opportunity to witness it, it's safer to watch from a distance. You'll smell the geothermally heated groundwater, and the hot springs gushing from the geyser's mouth spread all around, creating a strong, sulfurous aroma. Wait about 30 minutes, and you'll see several geysers of varying sizes. Whether you see the most spectacular one depends on your luck.
