Grindelwald-First is a mountain resort near the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland, often included on any itinerary for visitors to the region. The 25-minute cable car ride to Grindelwald-First is a long journey, but it's packed with exciting attractions, including the Tissot-designed First Cliff Walk, a thrilling steel walkway bolted to the cliffside. The "First Cliff Walk," which leads along the cliff face to an observation deck, will get even the most daring visitors' hearts racing.

Many scenic trails begin here, including those to Bachalpsee Lake or the Faulhorn mountain hut. More adventurous enthusiasts can also try epic ziplining, mountain karts, or scooters. Families can enjoy breathtaking views and thrilling activities high in the mountains.

On cooler days, simply grab a lounge chair on the restaurant's panoramic terrace and enjoy a drink while admiring the view.

Grindelwald is a small town in Switzerland, surrounded by majestic mountains. The scenery is beautiful year-round, but we were delighted to visit in spring, as I was able to admire the combination of snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, Alpine cows, and blooming dandelions.

1. Take the Grindelwald-First gondola

From the valley, the gondola ride takes approximately 25 minutes to Grindelwald-First. The small gondola, equipped with seats, provides a comfortable ride. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of the Grindelwald Valley, the Eiger, and the alpine meadows. On the way to the summit, you'll pass several intermediate stations (Bort and Schreckfeld). Most visitors ascend to the summit and disembark at the "First" station, near the cliff walk. After exiting the station, turn right to find the path leading to the cliff walk, the "First View" observation deck, and the Bakkerp Lake Trail. Turn left into the building to find restrooms and a restaurant.

2. First Cliff Walk

The First Cliff Walk by Tissot is a narrow steel track bolted to the rock face of First Mountain. It's a thrilling experience, even for those with a fear of heights. Exit the cable car station to the right and follow the signs to the First Cliff Walk. Walk along the dirt path for a few minutes until you see the entrance to the Cliff Walk on the left. Go through the gate and onto the metal walkway. The walkway is lined with high guardrails, making it safe even for small children. At the end of the bridge, you can walk to a glass-floored observation deck 45 meters (148 feet) above the ground. You may have to line up at the edge for photos. The hike lasts approximately 15 minutes, but can be longer. Throughout, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Eiger and other peaks in the Jungfrau Region. You'll feel like you're on top of the world! The walk ends at the First Restaurant, which has a charming outdoor panoramic terrace, perfect for coffee, a snack, or lunch. After the Cliff Walk, you can easily move on to your next activity, such as hiking or ziplining.

3. First Restaurant

First Berggasthaus, located next to the First cable car station, boasts the title of Europe's highest restaurant. It boasts a large outdoor terrace with stunning views. Seating is divided between a buffet and table service, so please decide beforehand. For a quick meal, ordering from the buffet is recommended, offering soups, salads, sandwiches, and a selection of hot dishes.

4. Hike to Bachalpsee Lake

Bachalpsee is a beautiful alpine lake, accessible via a one-hour hike in the mountains above the first stop in Grindelwald. This relatively easy hike is a great option for families and non-hikers seeking a relaxing Swiss hiking experience. All you need are comfortable walking shoes; no special hiking clothing or equipment is required.

When we first walked along the trail to Bachalpsee Lake, we met a couple from China. We had a great time chatting and took photos together.
