Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park, Iceland. Its name comes from the hexagonal black lava columns that frame it. Svartifoss translates to "black waterfall." From the visitor center, it's a 40-minute hike uphill to the base of the waterfall. Before reaching the top, I thought it was a side trail, but once I got there, I realized it was a long climb uphill—not exactly an easy climb!
Today, it took over four hours to drive to Glacier National Park, where this waterfall is located. We're going to participate in the iceberg hike tomorrow, so we decided to check out the terrain first. Since we won't have time to return after our glacier hike, I'll wait in the car while I ascend the mountain to photograph Svartifoss, Iceland's famous waterfall.
As we drove to Turner Glacier National Park, our last stop of the day, we were greeted by a stunning glacier scene on the approach. Since we couldn't stop to take photos while driving, they had considered this. A sign appeared just before we reached the picnic spot, but we were driving so fast and the sign didn't indicate whether it was on the right or left, so we had to look carefully to avoid missing the entrance. It was a real challenge. Fortunately, we stopped at the right spot and the weather cooperated, so we were able to capture some magnificent photos of the glacier. Thankfully, we were so grateful.

What makes Svartifoss so impressive is its hexagonal backdrop of black basalt cliffs. This is sure to make for some striking photos. It's understandable why the name Svartifoss literally translates to "black waterfall."
Looking down from the climb, you can see a vast plain with no horizon, which is very spectacular.
