Built in 1450, the Sforza Castle's origins date back to 1358–1368, when it was known as Castello di Porta Giovia and used as a residence by Galeazzo II Visconti, Duke of Milan. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded until it became one of the major military castles in 17th-century Europe.
Once the residence of the Sforza family, it is now a major national museum in Milan, encompassing 18 venues, including an art gallery, the Egyptian Archaeology Museum, and the Museum of Ancient Art. Its key collections include Michelangelo's final sculpture, "Rondanini Pietà," and Leonardo da Vinci's original manuscript, "Lamentation over Christ."
