Oslo Cathedral
Oslo Cathedral (Norwegian: Oslo domkirke)—formerly the Church of the Saviour (Norwegian: Vår Frelsers kirke)—is the main church of the Diocese of Oslo in the Church of Norway and the parish church in the city center. The present building was built between 1694 and 1697. The Norwegian Royal Family and the Norwegian Government use the cathedral for public events. It closed for renovations in August 2006 and reopened with a feast day mass on April 18, 2010.
The present-day Oslo Cathedral is the third cathedral in Oslo, Norway. The first, Hallvards Cathedral, was built by King Sigurd I of Norway in the first half of the 12th century. It was located next to the Old Bishop's Palace in Oslo, approximately 1.5 km (0.93 mi) east of the present-day cathedral. For nearly 500 years, Hallvards Cathedral was the city's most important church.
