Norway in a Nutshell: A Free Trip
I'd been planning a trip to Norway for a while, as its most alluring feature is its fjords. However, every time I looked at other itineraries, I was always at a loss as to where to begin. The country is so vast and has so many islands, I finally saw a package tour offered by the Norwegian National Board called "Norway in a Nutshell." That's when I decided to make my Norway itinerary.
The journey begins at Oslo Train Station, with a change of trains at Myrland and ends in Flam. The train journey takes over four hours, as it ascends from flatland to Myrland, the highest point at approximately 2,000 feet, before descending to Flam at sea level. The most spectacular of Norway's fjords is the Sognefjord, located between the Norwegian capital, Oslo, and Bergen. Therefore, we made this section our primary destination. Of course, we still had to visit Bergen. Since it was not enough to just see one fjord in Norway, we also arranged to see the stunning Lysefjord in Stavanger, the third largest city, and hike up the exciting Pulpit Rock.
